Insight Personality
Insights for Leaders: Supervising and Motivating Followers eBook
This PDF will help you be a more effective leader of Blues, Golds, Greens, and Oranges. It features 40 content-rich pages which describe the leadership characteristics of each color and the strengths they bring to an organization. It also offers suggestions on how to supervise and motivate your followers.
Understanding temperament plays an important role in leadership situations. It provides understanding of the strengths, wants, needs, and expectations of those you lead. It is a crucial factor to consider as you help people perform specific jobs and accomplish specific goals. It is the key to successfully motivating even the most reluctant follower.
For example, by knowing the personality style of those you lead, you’re better able to approach them in ways they prefer. Golds want facts, benefits, and clear instructions. They’re concerned with doing the right thing at the right time and in the right place. Greens like all the information you can give them. Give them alternatives, details, statistics, charts, and lots of time to make decisions. Oranges act on impulse and intuition and respond to action and excitement. With Blues, you need to be personable. Appeal to their emotions and explain how you can help them or those they love.
As you might imagine, certain personalities gravitate towards specific roles because they are able to perform the required behaviors naturally. For instance, if your organization needs a charismatic person who can take chances, act quickly in a crisis, and maintain high-levels of enthusiasm, look for an Orange. If you need someone who can stay on task, follow-through with assignments, and painstakingly complete paperwork, look for a Gold. If you need someone to troubleshoot complicated problems, research a new project, or suggest ways to improve something, look for a Green. If you need someone to listen with empathy, handle personal issues, and motivate people to achieve their potential, look for a Blue.
Of course, you can also fill these positions with people who have learned to perform the behaviors of a color other than their own. Just remember that their long-term success requires that they’re comfortable with this performance.
Leaders who know the colors of their followers are able to increase participation by rewarding them in meaningful ways. Blues need to feel they’re making a difference and respond to small tokens of appreciation. Oranges need immediate rewards and recognition for their performance. Greens need to be recognized for their ideas and commended for their competence. Golds need recognition for their production and dependability.
